Oh yeah, free standing is a good idea on a beach. It's a bear trying to get those wimpy little stakes to hold if there's a breeze. You can get bigger stakes, but they are not big enough. So you use deadmen (http://www.paddling.net/sameboat/archives/sameboat215.html) to hold the lines. But they take a little more work, and it's much easier to pitch a tent without worry about the stakes and then secure it to the beach in two seperate steps that to try to do both at the same time.
