The only time I've used one is on trips to the Channel Islands as they are required if you take the ferry out. You'll need them as they toss the kayaks in the water and make a chain to tow them through the surf. I could see wanting one if you have to launch off a high pier like Sta. Rosa by yourself in challenging conditions as it might be a bit hard getting your tow line unhooked. Not an issue if you take along company.
