Most of the Swedish mountain ranges are accessible for ordinary people,
and that was OK before the cellular phone! Now the Mountain Rescue is
called for just about anything that makes walking difficult, like
allergy to mosquitoes, to a sore foot! Mountain rescue is for
life-threatening, like a friend's girlfriend's broken leg
on a mountain slope, that forced him to walk some 30 miles
to get help - that had been so much better managed with a cellular
an EPIRB, or a Spot, as he than would have been able to stay at her side,
but in those day's neither excisted. CB radios did, but coverage was
not good, and the weight high! Once, on a mountain expedition in
a rocket landing area, we were given very high tech radios to
communicate with the rocket launching base - but natuŕally,
they didn't work! Now a cellular phone, aka a handy (in the UK),
will work in most places on earth, as long as you are on land!

Spot will have it uses, but as any technical gadget will not replace
knowledge, planning and physique!

I have carried a CB radio with me when paddling, but when we needed
to get in contact with the authorities, the batteries were dead!

Some even carry a short wave radio in their kayaks, but those are
just freaks - VHF and cellular is more than enough for me!
