  As you say, 'Gators aren't usually that interested in you as lunch.  I would think that since this was a night attack the gator probably was unable to identify his prey as a human.  
   Mating time isn't good either.  A bull gator is like a Moose or buck in heat -- brains disappear.  Buat also watch out once the young hatch.  Mama is very defensive.  An acquaintance of mine in Florida, a botanist, had his arm taken off a few years ago when he inadvertently got between some younkers and Mama...
   When I lived in Florida lo those many years ago, I paddled among them without any feelings of trepidation.
