It was my pleasure to house a couple Rogue Otters who washed up on shore at the Newport Coast Guard beach yesterday. Jerry Sparks set out from Crescent City, CA to paddle down the 1300+ miles of coastline. Brett Tanner provided logistical support until joining him on the water in Santa Barbara. They embarked on this adventure in honor of their late friend Jeremy Johnson and to raise money for the Vasculitis Foundation. Jerry and Brett are the kind of people you feel you can call friends after one night of gabbing around the kitchen table.I think it's easy for those of us who've read the stories of other great expeditions to take for granted one new trip, but when you hear the stories first person, you realize cheating death is cheating death whether someone has passed by that piece of coast before or not! It is even more impressive that Jerry and Brett were mostly just recreational kayakers before deciding to plan this trip in honor of their friend. I wish them good paddling on the completion of their inspiring journey and am glad for the chance to hear about their trek.
