I recently did something out of character. I may have crossed the
line. I gave in to a great desire.

Its all so confusing and exciting. The rush is almost overwhelming. I
fear it will end disastrously but fear is part of the rush.

I dont feel I can tell my kayak friends what I have done. I have
strayed. I'm an open boater! I bought a canoe.

Nothing is ever easy with me. I could have bought a used plastic
canoe off Craigslist, dragged it home and hid it behind the shed. It
could have free ranged next to the SOT living off an occasional
squirt of 303 sun protectant, carefree and wild. Instead I had to
buy a barn queen, a 1962 Old Town OTCA wooden canoe.

She was wearing red when I first saw her. Red! Big swoopy stems
embraced yards and yards of ribs glowing with patina that wrapped
around a nice big bottom. What could I do!

Serendipity can show itself in the oddest of ways. Three days after
buying her I found two canoe paddles in my neighbors trash. I
spirited them to my basement and hid them amongst the other paddles.
A man cannot change his stars. This is my fate. I must accept it.

Well as long as we're confessing here, I guess I'll join in. I own two jet
skis!!!

AND I LIKE THEM!

One is even a stand-up.

I just wish I could afford the gas to ride them.

PS: The wake from a jet ski is nowhere near enough to surf on; nothing like
a wakeboard boat. Trust me.

Well, since the confessional is open for business...

I just watched the canoe paddling video "Bill Mason's Path of the
Paddle" (I rented it from Netflix).
And I really enjoyed his mastery of the paddle and the craft.

BTW, He also paddled a red wooden canoe. Scary huh?

It's been said that "one man's trash is another man's treasure". I never
really took it seriously before, but I'm a believer now.

Congratulations. Canoeists are a much more evolved group than kayakers
(neither group being too much higher than pond scum--literally). Let's
get together and do some freestyle.
