We are thinking of taking a 5-day paddle trip during the winter. The idea is to give ourselves a respite from the Michigan winter and enjoy paddling the warmer water of the Gulf. My buddy and I paddled in the Everglades in late January this year and took a circle route from Flamingo to the Shark River via Florida Bay and back to Flamingo through Whitewater Bay and Coot Bay. It was a wonderful and successful trip. We liked the open water paddling, but we don't consider ourselves particularly accomplished. [We've practiced rolling a number of times and occasionally we've been successful more times than not.] This winter we'd like to try some other open water on the Florida coast. We enjoyed setting up our overnight stops in fairly remote locations and didn't mind hauling our water along. Can someone suggest routes or areas to putting along that coast? I think our timing for this trip is likely to be the last week in January or the early to middle part of March. It seems like the weather might be fairly mild and the winds light enough to allow a couple of guys to gain some further experience.
