This is the classic loop paddle out of Aldrich Point, located some 30 miles east of Astoria on the Columbia River. It runs past float houses near Woody Island, across the river to sample the beach just below Jim Crow Point, followed by a gentle gunkholing session along the WA shore, and a return via any one of several routes ambling through the marshy waters above Woody Island. This day's route was about 8 miles, all told, with an extended session on the beach, dodging a huge freighter wake and making the best possible use of a beach log. Probably fifty variants possible, pending stamina and interest. We enjoyed the blue-birdest day of blue bird days, September, 2008. The route is one which we used two years ago to introduce Terry and Bruce Turner to paddling on the Columbia, albeit their introduction was in cold, drizzly conditions, chosen to scare a couple of wussy Californians away. It did not work. Now that they know about bluebird days, I think we are really stuck with them.
