I'm planning to visit some relatives in Fairbanks, Alaska this summer
and am wondering if there are any paddlewisers out there with experience
paddling in the area/region. I've found some info in a whitewater
guidebook but little else. I'm wondering if anyone has done any
multi-day camping trips in touring boats up there.

Thanks,
Frank

There are quite a few outfitters in the Anchorage/Kenai/Homer area but
Fairbanks is way inland and the only paddling would most likely be on lakes
or rivers. You can get some information by going to:
http://www.seakayakermag.com/advertisers/_Outfitters_Alaska.htm as well as
www.wavelengthmagazine.com (which may have outfitters in AK).

It's also likely that the Rev may have some input. He lives and paddles in
AK; albeit in SE area. But it wouldn't surprise me to discover that he is a
wellspring of good advice.

Having lived near there for a couple of years I would not use a typical
touring kayak. The streams twist and turn too often and too sharp with many
strainers and dead head ( tree stumps) in the water. Sea kayaks just do not
turn fast enough . I have canoed several rivers out side of Fairbanks ( The
Chena and the Steese to name a couple) and think the canoe works better. You
can get in and out of the canoe faster especially if you are about to hit a
strainer. The old leap and climb like hell move has saved a many a life on
these rivers.
It is beautiful country though just go prepared for the bugs!
