For southern California kayakers that have been following this news (a
favorite SoCal kayak surfing area - San Onofre State Beach)...

Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez today upheld objections by the
California Coastal Commission over the Transportation Corridor Agency's
plans to build a six-lane, 16-mile highway through one of the most
ecologically diverse state beaches in the California state parks system.

At this rate we are going to run out of beaches to run freeways over. So
many beaches are backed by steep cliffs and rich people's houses now that
pristine beaches useful only for launching kayaks or camping or freeways are
becoming difficult to find.

On a more serious note... I quit a perfectly good job with the Washington
State Highway Department (as it was then known) when I realized that the
swamp I was running a transit line through - which was full of diverse life
- was slated to become an interchange on the I-405/520 freeway system. This
was in 1965.

So I got myself another job. With CIA. LOL.

I am often amazed / befuddled by the 'road' to 'land use' ratio. The
ratio increases the more urban the setting becomes. There can be more
real estate devoted to the road than what it leads to. It's almost
like the buildings are just an excuse for some place to go to, so
that we can get into our cars and drive.

LOL... that's a great story. And not only that, but I never did get those
damn stains out of my shirt.
