Hmm.
A couple years ago Alaska beaches were covered with Nike running shoes lost
off a barge. Now its boobs! Pretty soon we will have boobs running everywhere
here in Alaska!

News flash! A rare bird was just sited in Alaska ...a Blue Footed Boobie!

Sorry but I had to milk this story for all it was worth.

In this case, it looks like it was "bust".

One assumes the boobs were not inflated for shipping -- in order to
save space. If someone did steal them, do you think they know what
they've got? Or are they still standing around the opened case,
scratching their heads....

Lots of items have been lost off container ships in the North Pacific: the
duckies, Nike running shoes, hockey mitts, etc. The Boobies are just the
latest variant.

And, yes, honest oceanographic research has made use of the drift patterns.

Sometimes there are good things associated with such an event.
The Lehigh River is a popular whitewater venue in NE Pennsylvania and is mostly dam-release driven. Usually by summertime there's little water left behind the flood control dam to sustain paddling activities.
Back in the mid 90s, a freight train crossing the river had a car derail and overturn, spilling thousands and thousands of KMart plastic bags into the river. They floated for some 10-20 miles downstream, getting stuck into/onto everything. Authorities shut off the dam to a trickle while workers spent a few days going along the river picking up as many as they could.
At the same time, the work was interrupted by really big thunderstorms filling up the dam backwaters. When the work was done there was a Lot of water but they couldn't just dump it, because a new pumping station was under construction about 10 miles below and all they could do was release it at a level that wouldn't flood it out.
So we paddlers had weeks of very nice levels there at a time we would ordinarily been thinking of traveling much longer distances to get on the water -- thanks to those KMart bags...
