I skied a lot and it was considered common courtesy to flip the seat of a chair lift up so the next skier wouldn't have to sit on the snow collected as the chair traveled back down the hill for its next load. As we got onto the lift we'd just reach back and flip the seat down and sit down all in one movement. This guy must not have been very experienced or maybe the customs have changed; we don't have many chair lifts in cross-country skiing. How do you explain a case of butt-frostbite?
