Just an addendum:

The guy was a Swedish official, who was ordered to go to Gotland in
the middle of Baltic with the first post boat for the season. The gang-
pressed farmers who acted as crew on the post boat (the official post
was worth more than a few farmers well-being).

To us modern people this is amazing, that free men could be forced to
help (and supply the boat as well), but mail (today phone, email and fax)
is always very important, more important than people to governments:

Remember that till the 1940's the main use for transatlatic flights were
as postal service - the famed Imperial Airways flying boats carried many
tons of mail, but only a handful, or two, of passengers (about as many
crew men as passengers!).
