<FontFamily>Every year for past 23 years, I and others ha paddled and sailed in the St Lawrence Thousand Islands Canadian National Park. Much prettier than the highly developed US side of that waterway. Looks like those days are nearly over! Chuck Sutherland ---------------------------------------- Subject: TIARA - Canadian Government to Gut Navigable Waters Protection Act for the sake of economic growth. Greetings from TIARA; A fan of TIARA's Heritage River Project (<pFF>www.slhr.ca) from the Cornwall area alerted us to some very disturbing news. The Canadian Federal government has plans virtually all environmental protection provisions for Navigable Canadian waterways for the sakeconomic development. Hard to believe, but we've checked and it's true! We've learned; "If you can drive anything smaller than a cruise ship down a waterway in Canada, it will be considered navigable and is fair game to developers to build anything and everything on / over / in without an environmental impact assessment. A sad day for rivers in Canada if these amendments are allowed to pass, which the government is trying to fast track as part of their budget to expedite infrastructure projects to help get the economy moving - i.e. short term gain for permanent long term irreparable damage. TIARA will protest this plan by taking the matter up with Federal Parliamentary representatives from all along the St. Lawrence River. In the meantime, what follows is a broadcast email from the Canadian Rivers Network. We remain concerned about the Harper government's intentions to gut the Navigable Waters Protection Act and exempt thousands of waters from the provisions of the act by calling them "minor waters" and by exempting "minor works" from the provisions of the act.<FontFamilyr> *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
