G'day, Went down to Manly Wharf to watch Freya come in yesterday as she had paddled from Jibbon Head Beach on the South side of Port Hacking. Not such a big sea today. Mike Steinfeld gave me the word that she had just come in at Shelly Beach so ran a km or two to say hi and see if she needed anything. It was 6pm with a slight drizzle and she was a lone figure on the beach. Freya was carefully stowing her gear away so I didn't interrupt. She packs her gear very neatly using something like an Ikea bag but a bit more upmarket and the bag is black of course! She talks about "setting up her house with an office, a kitchen, sleeping quarters etc" by which she means the tent! The paddle had been much easier today and she was tempted to paddle under the desalinator rig off Kurnell Peninsula. Her photographs show that its much lower in the water than usual. Wonder what they are up to! The blue bottles she encountered tend to blow in on the easterlies and can give a quite unpleasant sting - I think they are called "Portugese Men O' War" in Europe. Freya had many offers of accommodation and the EPIC sponsors were there so a few more photo's for the collection and then I drove her to Mikes place where we all had dinner together. She's a delightful lady very easy to talk to, very focussed as you would expect, and it was a privilege to meet her. Freya left Shelly Beach, at 8am today aiming for Broken Head just north of the Skillion and Broken Bay. Theres a storm warning/gale warning due but she should make it in time - if not there are many pullout points on the way. Have to say I was always a bit sceptical about the Spot system but its great being able to track her progress and to see where and when shes arrived. All the best, PeterO *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
