Duane, Ken and I took advantage of gorgeous mid Feb. weather to head to San
O today. Waves weren't real big, so it was a good day for long boats,
although Ken brought the 'Surfin' Coffin'. It was my first chance to see
Duane's new Point Bennett Low Rider and him to see the new Sapsucker.

There were some nice sized waves rolling in on occasion, with rolling and
occasion being the operative words. There wasn't a nice face for Ken to get
his surf boat moving, but we in the long boats had no trouble. While we
waited for the sets to come, we used the time to work on rolling and Duane
gave me a couple good suggestions.

This was my first chance to see how my Tempest would surf and I'm glad that
wasn't really one of the qualities I was looking for in my next long boat. I
just couldn't keep the boat from broaching, whether with the skeg up or
down. The Lollygagger actually surfs pretty good, but only with the rudder
down and I don't have that option in the Sapsucker. Still, I had some fun
rides and didn't have any trouble with the three combat rolls I had to do.
No swimming today and I'm glad of it, because a while back our local paper
had an article about all the shark sightings lately at our favorite surf
site.

I told Duane of my difficulty trying to keep the boat straight and he said
it was operator error, so I challenged him to do better. He took my boat out
and had no trouble and then took Ken out just for good measure. Ken and I
did get some satisfaction as Duane wiped out on his first attempt at trying
to catch a late breaking wave.

Back on the beach we marveled at our good luck to have such a beautiful day
to kayak. The conditions were conducive to easy fun for our long boats. We
each enjoyed a Cutie on the sand, then bid farewell to ol' San O.

P.S. If anyone has any experience or opinion on surfing a Tempest 170, I'd
like to hear it. I'm inclined to think my extra weight in the boat would
tend to make it act a lot different for me than Duane. Still it's a new boat
for me, so I'll work on edging in the wave to see if that helps in the
future.

I'm jealous! I'll probably be taking my new boat out to San O this weekend
to get a feel for bracing etc. in it. :)
