This reminds me of the first time a poster on rec.boats.paddle mentioned 
taking a cell phone on a river trip so he could do phone tech support if 
necessary. He got a ton of crap for presuming to despoil the pristine 
wilderness environment with the noxious ringing of a phone, yada yada 
yada. His response was similar to Craig's: I can be on the water with my 
phone, or I can sit at home. No brainer.

And if you don't want to be "tethered" it's still possible to plead "no 
service." Which I did yesterday, as a matter of fact ;)
