G'Day Doug, I reckon you exemplified "backup" nicely - circles of protection in priority order :~) - judgement - physical skill - well selected and maintained equipment - in spite of all this strife happens! It used to be if I was accidentally knocked out of my boat I'd have a good chance of getting back in. These days if its bad enough to knock me out of my boat I'd have a very low chance. So on the rare occasions I'm alone at sea a tether is a counter to risk homeostasis. Hope I never have to rely on it! Fortunately Freya seems to be a master of dynamic risk analysis and resourcefulness. Also she might have picked up a new PFD in Mackay or Townsville.
