I greatly appreciate the indepth review of the difficulties of running chat groups etc.provided by Rich Kulawiec and others. I promise to buy his book as soon as it comes out. Don't know if I will be able to understand it. None-the-less, the very restrictive publishing rules that govern our ability to quote from published sources or re-publish, with attribution, information published by Paddlewise contributors has often caused me, and perhaps others, to be constantly on "pins and needles" regarding whether a given post will make it through or die a silent death in the screen bin. To facilitate getting through, I usually just post the subject on-line address and invite folks to "look it up", with out going into what is being looked up. It has often seemed inordinately easy to get into unnecessary or unjustified trouble on on this list. This is unfortunate since I think the international membership and high quality of contributions to this site are a worthy contribution to the paddling community. Many Paddlewise subscribers participate in other local chat groups, making Paddlewise have a truly broad reach to the larger paddling community. Didn't Kirk mention short quotes as okay, with source, back a while ago? Doesn't sound too onerous or restrictive, given the pre-existing conditions for using the list. Now if I was old and cranky like a lot of you on this list, maybe I'd be more annoyed. :-) Doug Lloyd >I greatly appreciate the indepth review of the difficulties of running > chat groups etc.provided by Rich Kulawiec and others. However, with the Supreme Court we have now, stay on the look out for more attacks on free speech. Recently the Supremes (5-4 decision) really cranked down on inadvertent, single-word slips of the tongue on network TV/radio. Fox got nailed for "allowing" Cher to make a single use of the F-word during the Grammys a couple years ago. Fines of many thousands of dollars, _for_ _each_ _word_. -- Dave Kruger Astoria, OR *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Chuck, I understand your concern about tromping on someone else's copyright. I agree the broad reach here is a major asset. Keep on hammering us. Good to see some ink about you in Sea Kayaker mag.
