Coast Guard seeks missing kayaker, public assistance

Press release

May 14, 2009 7:56 PM

EASTPORT, Maine -- The Coast Guard is looking for any
information regarding the whereabouts of Richard Thurlow, a 33-
year-old man who went missing after kayaking to Grand Manan,
New Brunswick, Canada Wednesday, May 13.

A family member reported Thurlow left Lubec, Maine, in a 16- to 18-
foot red kayak bound for the island, a trip of about 10 miles.

Canadian Customs reported that he checked in with them when he
arrived on the island, and that he spent the night, but he has not
been seen nor heard from since. He was expected to return today
at 11 a.m.

A Coast Guard 41-foot utility boat crew from Station Eastport and a
Falcon jet crew from Air Station Cape Cod searched from Lubec to
Grand Manan, but found no signs of Thurlow.

"With the weather turning bad, he may have decided to spend
another night on the island," said Paul Conner, search and rescue
controller at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. "He
doesn't have a cell phone or a radio, so there's no way we can
know where he is or if he's alright."

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Coast Guard
Sector Northern New England at 207-767-0303
