The waterline length would be very little increased with extra weight (and the
kayaks effective WL increases even less with weight than the actual WL). The
extra weight added would mean you were shoving a lot more water aside going
through it which makes far bigger waves and therefore extra weight increases
the wavemaking resistance of the kayak far more than any WL length increase
from adding weight could reduce it.

The inertia increase seems the most likely reason, that is, if the difference
is real and not just imaginary. I wrote about inertia in a post earlier about
Doug's experience. My latest post from yesterday hasn't made it to the digest
yet. Does that mean I'm being censored in moderation? Did my inertia post get
through. I do recall reading someone else commenting on the inertia difference
though pointing out that Doug's weight gain may have compensated for the
lighter kayak so I'll assume my post made it though and started the inertia
track.

Another possibility may be illusion. If Doug has gotten weaker as he has
gotten older he may not be starting his glide from as high a speed now. Since
I haven't seen any tests using both boats under nearly identical circumstances
there is also the possibility of misremembering the feeling of glide in his
old cherished kayak. Love can mess with perceptions like that.
