[Paddlewise] Efficient Stroke

To add to what has already been said:

Splashy stroke - I think any energy used to move water through the air
rather than the boat through the water is wasted energy. As coach
Endicott used to preach: "Don't abuse the water!"

Zen - paddling well is a Zen experience. One of my goals in every
training sesion is to clear my mind of the stuff that clogged it up
during the day. And also to build up an appetite so I can enjoy the hot
dog/cheeseburger/beer afterwards. The only Zen and hot dog joke I know:

[What did the Buddhist monk say to the hot dog vendor? Make me
one with everything]

[The monk pays the hot dog guy with a $20 bill. The vendor takes it and
does nothing. The monk says "Where is my change?" What does the vendor
say? "Change comes from within."]

I really believe that speed over distance equals efficiency. In the
Olympic 100 meter sprint, the runners are slowing down at the end of the
race. Humans cannot go even ten seconds at full exertion. So, to go a
long distance in a kayak without being exhausted means some sort
efficiency is at work. Ditto if the distance is covered at speed.

This has been a very educational discussion. I appreciate reading
everyone's offerings. Rev. Bob's humor especially.
