What's going on? Sorry, but I love to hear about corporate carnage.

The only other thing I'd seen in the news recently was a note on the Reuters website that

Johnson Outdoors will be consolidating their entire paddlesports operation in Old Town, Maine and will shut down their operations in FernDale, Washington...

johnson outdoors announced a closing of a factory in Washington State a few
months ago. there are rumors of bankruptcy. i repeat - they are rumors.

the paddlesport industry in general is in economic turmoil - along with
other industries and individuals. retail sales are down. a good indicator of
the future could be to look at who did not attend the Outdoor Retailer event
this year. I heard Werner Paddles decided to skip this year. This could be
a precursor to things to come next year. It is probably reasonable to
expect lower "pre-season" orders this fall as retailers will still have stock
from this year's orders.

Their report today indicates that things are OK -- less sales but better
profit margins on those sales, and a consolidation into Old Town to reduce
costs of two separate large facilities. Not bad for a manufacturer in the
recreation industry through a sharp recession.
