[Paddlewise] Timing your arrival

Hey gang,
    This summer as usual I have hosted a number of kayakers who are paddling
through Southeast Alaska. Petersburg in a popular resupply stop along the way.
I have noted that many of them push a lot of miles the last day to get here.
Usually this means they arrive in town in the evening. By that time most
things are closing down in town and they also discover there is no campground
in town. I often come to their rescue and give them a place to stay. I enjoy
the conversations and stories. However my observation is that it is really not
good planning to hit any town late. For those of you who plan the long trips
with resupplies along the way I would suggest camping a few miles short of
town and paddling in the next morning.
    Also with some of our native villages please be sensitive to where you
camp. In some places the village grave yard is located out of town or on an
Island. Once while living in Angoon the village police officer came to me
letting me know a kayaker was camped by the grave yard and people were really
upset. He asked me to talk to the guy and ask him to move. Other wise he would
have to force him to move and the officer really did not want to have to do
that.
    If you plan to camp on an island near a village paddle around it first to
make sure it is not the town graveyard or an old village site. This is not
about superstituution or ghost, I believe in neither but simply about
respect.
