Some people do use redwood for a GP, but it is too brittle for my tastes.
For surf I prefer spruce or pine. For regular touring I prefer WRC. 

 

I recently cracked my favorite WRC paddle. I was teaching a class and
emphasizing to the students that you don't simply pull back on the paddle,
rather you anchor the paddle and pull yourself up to the paddle. With that,
I gave a strong plant and anchored the blade as if it was stuck in dense
mud, pushed with my lower leg while I rotated my torso strongly and CRACK!
(a long crack down the center of the loom).  At least my favorite blade
(that I used in Greenland twice) will make a nice wall-hanging..
