Likewise, I have never experienced a rogue wave, but that doesn't mean they're not out there!

I do recall reading some of the science which explained the phenomena [ basically two large waves combining].

And locally, during the tragic 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race, a 90-footer was observed; measured on the altimeter of a rescue helicopter which was in the act of winching a yachtman out of the sea when the monster swept through.  It almost claimed the chopper as the pilot scrambled for altitude with seconds to spare.  Captured on 'film' by the crew of another aircraft.
