[Paddlewise] Iphone App Runkeeper... tracks your workout

I stumbled across a new application for the iPhone that utilizes the GPS
capabilities to track your workout sessions. While it is designed to be used
for running/cycling there is no reason that it couldnt also be used for
paddling. One review cautions that it's a battery hog with a 1 hour workout
consuiming 50% of the avaliable charge however if you blank the screen (the
little button on the top of the iPhone 3G) you get 4 hours. Probably not
enough for a weekend trip (unless you use a solar charger from ThinkGeek)
but certainly enough for a day paddle.

Runkeeper also lets you store your results on their site which includes
(apparently) a mapping utility as well. So if you don't have a GPS that maps
and tracks and publishes then this would work; but only if you have an
iPhone.

There is also an app which lets you use free NOAA marine charts along with
the GPS facility to show position data using GPS functions. This app costs
about US$55 but the charts are free downloads.

Since I take my iPhone with me (unfortunately I have to stay in touch at
least during the day due to my business commitements) this sort of app would
make sense.

By the way, the iPhone 3G is apparently slightly smaller than the original
iPhones because the $30 hard watertight case I bought is too small by just
*this* much.
