Jerry, Not a bad idea to have a VHF if you are crossing ship channels. Listen to VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) on ch 14, I think. You may also telephone them at 206-217-6051 and inquire about traffic on your route. You may be asked which unit and the demarcation point in Western Washington is north or south of Smokey Point.
