[moderator note - I checked with the editor of Sea Kayaker Magazine, and was granted permission for forwarding of the newsletter item] I don't think that Sea Kayaker Magazine will mind me forwarding this to Paddlewise. It's a notification of the serious dilemma the people of Baja California and the Sonoran cities on the other side of the Sea of Cortez are having as a result of hurricane Jimena earlier this month. US media lost interest in Jimena after the storm bypassed the Cabo resort communities and the capitol city of La Paz however serious destruction occurred in Mag Bay, across the flat areas near Constitucion, and the central villages lining the east and west sides of the Sea. Sta. Rosalia, Mulege, Loreto on the Baja side were heavily damaged with as many as 35,000 people homeless. On the other side Guaymas and San Carlos were both flooded and damaged with 8 yachts blown ashore in the main anchorage and ten boats in dry storage toppled. The bottom of the article gives contacts for donations of items needed by displaced residents of the affected areas. They include toothpaste, tents, blankets, food, books for children (in Spanish or just pictures), etc. Craig Jungers Moses Lake, WA www.nwkayaking.net ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Sea Kayaker Magazine <sknewsletter_at_seakayakermag.com> Date: Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 12:30 PM Subject: SK Newsletter Help needed following Hurricane Jimena To: crjungers_at_gmail.com [image: Sea Kayaker magazine]<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=1035919663&msgid=31097683 &act=QOWT&c=101425&admin=0&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.seakayakermag.com%2F> *SK Newsletter September 16, 2009 * [image: Sea Kayaker magazine]<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=1035919663&msgid=31097683 &act=QOWT&c=101425&admin=0&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.seakayakermag.com%2F> * * *Baja Suffering in the Wake of Hurricane Jimena* Last week we received an email from Joe Dryden about the destruction wrought by the hurricane that tore across the middle of the Baja peninsula. Baja is an important kayaking destination for many North American paddlers and the area deserves our support in its time of need. Here's Joe's letter and a link to an article that you can use to direct support to the Mexican Red Cross and the Baja Bush Pilots: Hurricane Jimena came through central Baja and laid waste to the towns of Lopez Mateos, Constituticion, Loreto, Mulege, Santa Rosalia and many smaller communities. These folks are in a world of hurt and are just now receiving the first outside contact after a week of no food, water or electricity. Since I have a long history in Baja and know how many kayak touring outfitters have profited from the hospitality of these good folks, I'm sending you a link to an article (one of the very few) on the state of things. At the end of the article are links to sites that the folks up north can donate to in the form of goods or money. I am asking you to spread the word because down here my resources for contacting are limited. We had our own disaster last year when Hurricane Norbert came through Alamos and sent an epic wave of mud, rock and water rushing through town. We were isolated for days before helicopters arrived and later we co-ordinated with the awesome members of Baja Bush Pilots to bring down thirty two private planes of emergency relief supplies. They again have been the first to respond to the crisis in Baja. http://www.mexidata.info/ id2402.html<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=1035919663&msgid=310976 83&act=QOWT&c=101425&admin=0&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mexidata.info%2Fid2 402.html> Cheers, Joe Dryden ------------------------------ *Sea Kayaker* magazine, independently owned and operated since 1984 PO Box 17029, Seattle, WA 981270729 206.789.9536 sknewsletter_at_seakayakermag.com Subscribe<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=1035919663&msgid=31097683 &act=QOWT&c=101425&admin=0&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.seakayakermag.com%2Fm iva%2Fmerchant.mvc%3FScreen%3DCTGY%26Category_Code%3DS>to *Sea Kayaker *magazine Subscribe<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=1035919663&msgid=31097683 &act=QOWT&c=101425&admin=0&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.seakayakermag.com%2Fs ignupform.html>to SK Newsletter (free via email) *Copyright 2009 Sea Kayaker Magazine - All Rights Reserved* *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
