There are a number of kayak rental places in the area but I'll second Greg's recommendation of Monterrey Bay Kayaks. They have a big shop just east of the marina in Monterrey itself and a secondary shop (at least they had it last year) at Moss Landing (the outlet of Elkhorn Slough). MBK rents sea kayaks as well as SOT kayaks and will give you a guided tour of Elkhorn. I paddled my own kayak into Elkhorn Slough on a blustery day last year and had a wonderful paddle. Unfortunately it was too nasty to paddle the kelp beds off Monterrey itself. If you can get away I'd suggest that you do both if the weather is cooperative.
