As of yesterday there has been no sign of the missing kayaker, Douglas
Winter, after his empty kayak was found on a beach by hikers. Reports say
that his wallet has been found washed ashore.

There are intriguing elements to this story including reports that he sent
notes and money to relatives with the notes written on the stationery of the
Lodge where he stayed and where his car was found still parked in the lot
but without a kayak.

Link to the story: http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/149958/

The article mentions yet another area man who told friends he was going
fishing and whose car was found but not him.

Too bad the fellow died. Paddling offshore on Superior at night in
mid-October in blowy weather is so risky as to be either stupid or suicidal.
Since he was an experienced paddler, he knew the risks. That, combined with
his giving cash away to a couple of relatives for no particular reason makes
me suspect that his final paddle was a suicide.

Kinda sounds that way Richard. An experienced paddler heading out into
specifically bad conditions ev'ning-time isn't necessarily suicidal or
stupid if the paddler is up to the task. If trouble comes, anyone attempting
such an outing would have a good survival attitude and backups in place such
that failure wouldn't be an option - certainly not death.

Or as Sheriff Wydell said to Officer Dobson in The Devil's Rejects, "Dying
is not an option. Now you stick that back in that gray matter of yours and
you make that stick. Cause any other thought is gonna get you cold slab, toe
tag and mailed home to your mamma in a plastic bag. Are we crystal?"
