The latest self-made and self-produced film about 2 people doing something
in the outdoors is "Paddle to Seattle". (
http://www.dudesonmedia.com/HOME.html ). Josh Thomas and J.J. Kelly built
two plywood kayaks (they look a lot like Pygmy kayaks to me) and paddled
1200 miles from Alaska to Seattle and made a movie about it. It's not their
first movie either. They made another movie called "Peddle to the Midnight
Sun" in which they made two plywood bicycles and.... what's that?..... oh...
my mistake. They weren't plywood bicycles, apparently, but you get the idea.

Then there are the two outdoors people (one of whom has an MA in "art
therapy") who are planning to leave somewhere on Earth Day of 2010 (April
2nd.... I dunno why they can't leave on April 1st; maybe it's not too late
to change that) and paddle kayaks, canoes and dogsleds.... what?.... oh.....
maybe they won't paddle the dogsleds... and make a movie about it and post
their daily exploits for school children to watch and learn from.

Then there's the guy who pedaled from Mexico to Seattle and Paddled from
Seattle to Skagway. I don't think he built anything, actually. But he did
make at least a few presentations about it.

I was sitting here on the sofa in my Spongebob jammies waiting for the
latest re-run of "I Love Lucy" when I got to thinking.... "Hey!" I thought
to myself, "I could do that." So I am formally announcing my plans for a new
adventure movie called "Grampa Goes South".

In my movie (and updates on my weblog) school children all over North
America will be able to follow Grampa (namely, me) as he travel south
searching for weather that won't bother his arthritis or stuff up his nose.
They'll be able to see him dealing with such emergencies as taking the
awning on the RV in at 3am during a hurricane in Oregon, looking for the
men's room at 4am, and trying to figure out how to program the microwave.
With any luck I'll be able to get a few scenes of highway roadkill that will
dampen eyes everywhere.

The catch in my movie will be that both Grampa and the RV he is towing with
his old pickup truck are old.

I expect to make hundreds of dollars out of this.

Donations are welcome.

The ones that seem to do the best focus on the personal interactions between
the introspective film maker and the people he or she encounters along the
way, a la Ross McElwee's Sherman's March."

Seriously, go for it!

Oregon is beautiful this time of year. It has rained about 2 inches
from
8:00-10:00 am today. Bring your drysuit and snorkle.
