I have an optio w10 camera that works quite well for still pics while
kayaking. But I'm thinking of purchasing something that might shoot better
video clips.

I've looked at the "Hero" on line but must say I was not impressed with the HD
wide angle clips I've seen to date. I also didn't think much of the choppy
frame to frame transition. Can't recall if that was at 30 frames per second
or 60. I certainly would not use the helmet mount unless I wanted to give
viewers vertigo. I'm thinking I would like to mount something to an elevated
post that I would either mount fore or aft of the cockpit.

I want to use the camera in some local tide races, surf and dynamic water
environments - lots of rough water, big waves, to catch the drama of these
conditions.

Any suggestions would be most welcomed. Sorry if I'm revisiting a thread that
most likely has already appeared, but the way technology jumps ahead any
thread a year old might no longer be pertinent.

Here's a video Duane shot before his Hero made the ultimate sacrifice!

I get tired just watching Duane making that long paddle out through several
breaking waves. He makes it look easy.

Steve H.,

Those waves are pretty soft.

Paddlewisers,

When my Hero GoPro died after a few weeks, I took it back to REI for the 100% guarantee, and the lady working there told me they've been getting a lot of them returned. But it was a cool system while it worked.

I'm curious to know how the camera failed. Was it a failure of the water
proof case that let water in or was it something else? If water got in did
it happen after a particular incident (endo in surf, smash up in rocks) or
was the failure due to some quality control issue with the electronics?

I appreciated the video link Mark sent.

The only other kayak clip of the helmet cam I'd seen was shot in the
Okisollo Tide Race. If you do not successfully break out and slip backwards
onto the leading wave here your kayak gets pushed into the following chaos.
With four and five foot waves slamming you from all directions the helmet
cam works like a fruit fly on acid. Your head and consequently the camera
darts from one instantaneous image, to the next view, constantly seeking
where the next threat (wave) is coming from until you essentially either out
guess yourself or fall one brace behind and get knocked over. I know this
from both my short experience and from a longer helmet cam video shot by
some kayaking friends. In this scenario I don't know if any camera fixed to
either a helmet or deck would be ideal. I suspect two cameras would be
needed. One fixed and stable on shore the other dynamic and mounted on
board to capture the frantic action.

In the video Mark sent I found it fascinating how Duane ran off that guy
riding the plank and using a broom. I assume each tribe has it's own
territory in the California surf zone. I also appreciated how Duane
graciously endeavoured to show us some submarine views of the dynamic surf
zone. Very considerate. Loved the rides; especially in the long boat.

cams and a person in the muthah-ship (or in the Zodiac) with a cam to
document some kayaking trips around the PNW. Some areas are not suitable for
this approach but others would be perfect. Plus I can bring my wife along so
I can eat properly. Not that I need much more proper eating, mind you. Plus
I'd have my comfy bunk.

And if a bear wreaks havoc among the kayak campers on the beach I could be
relied upon to go get help.

Gordin,

I was on the inside of that stand-up paddler, so I had the right of way over him. But two more people were were on the inside of me and had the right of way over me, so I was just getting out of the way. But we do tend to share waves at San Onofre.

The camera failed after some water leaked in while kayaking.

I have conclued the Hero GoPro is great for gear heads. No let me rephrase
that. It's great for cog heads. Guys with lots of teeth on their chain
rings, be they bike, motorcycle cars or speed boats, where the camera will
stay relatively stable and dry. Of course they seem to work well stuck out
on the end of surf board staring back at the rider.

I'd like to see more footage shot by kayakers using the Hero GoPro.

Duane bought a Hero, I think it lasted a week! A while ago I went through a
lot of reviews of the Hero on the internet and most owners seemed a bit
disappointed.
I'm interested in the new waterproof Lumix by Panasonic which shoots in HD,
but it ain't cheap!
