Re: [Paddlewise] PFDs and risk

When I first started kayaking off Point Defiance Park (alone), I would
frequently get asked", Isn't that dangerous?"
I would always reply, "Yes- and I drove on I-5 to get here, too!"
I never had anyone fail to get the point. If they pushed it, I
explained about the drysuit and safety equipment and sometimes even went over
the current tide and current situation. By that time I was ready to launch,
anyway!

If you knew the odds of drowning while kayaking during each year were one
in
5000 would you paddle? Would you let your children take up kayaking? Would
you
rescue someone else who took on that level of risk?

If you live in an urban area that is about the average risk of dying in an
auto accident (each year) if you drive a car.

Thank you Dave Kruger for your well reasoned comments on this subject.
