Rumor has it that the 2010 WCSKS in Port Townsend, WA may not happen. This is one of the oldest - if not THE oldest - sea kayak seminars in the US and it would be a shame if it missed. The site has significant positives for the excellent beach which seems well protected regardless of most winds (only a wind with significant easterly component results in problems), a great camping area with utilities right there, and plenty of room and parking. The most significant downside is the silly restrictions against selling on the beach (but it's ok up the hill in the buildings) which means that the associating running the seminars has to provide space in the buildings and every entity that wants to sell anything has to buy a spot there and man it in addition to a spot on the beach. Up until recently the Rangers went so far as to actually rip off "For Sale" signs on kayaks even if they were in a rack on a car!!! (However, the Rangers had no problem allowing staff to park in disabled parking areas despite a state law which forbids using these spaces for management or staff.) A couple of us were wondering if it's true and, if so, whether it's related to money or volunteers (or both). Given the condition of the economy right now it's no problem imagining this all to be true. The WCSKS web page says that no date has been selected for 2010 and no links work. This makes it difficult to reserve a campsite there at the Fort Warden park. The second rumor is that the seminar in Tacoma will not be held this year. Does anyone have any more information? From: "Craig Jungers" Sea Kayak Seminar for 2010 > Rumor has it that the 2010 WCSKS in Port Townsend, WA may not happen. I heard from some volunteers a few years ago that the Park fees were getting to be extremely high, and that the organizers were looking for alternative sights. One rumored site was Jericho beach in Vancouver BC. Last years economy and its impact on retail kayak operations may have tipped the organization over the edge. I haven't been to the symposium since about 06 or 07 but hope it survives. gordin Warner Victoria *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). The latest information on the 2010 West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium (WCSKS), normally held in September, is that it will not be happening this year. This comes from two members of TAKS, the sponsoring organization. No one seems to know if it will revive in 2011 but my experience with such things is that once they stop they stay stopped. I sure hope I'm proven wrong on this; at least this time. Also no Tacoma kayak symposium (usually held in the summer). I'm thinking about holding my own kayak symposium at Port Townsend anyway. It could be even more fun as there are lots of places to paddle in that area and I've only barely scratched the surface. And the campgrounds at Fort Warden State Park make an excellent home base.
