I believe that the likelihood of cold shock if capsizing in colder areas,
vs a warm bath in warmer climes, makes this an "apples and oranges"
discussion. Calm seas and warm water equals a bath, if you wet exit. Cold water
and/ or high boat traffic makes wearing a PFD an immediate life and death
issue.
Correct cold weather gear such as a drysuit gives you more time but
cold shock is still a potential issue. If you just have a heart attack and
die in your kayak, the PFD doesn't matter.

Skill comes in as an issue when someone who feels confident decides
that not wearing the PFD, for whatever reason, is a reasonable and rational
decision. It's hard to second guess them unless they die. It's when NOT
wearing the PFD is a matter of laziness, lack of thought, poor decision making
and lack of knowledge that the laws could make a difference. If the person
even knows that there is a law.

G'Day,

Just to let you know the 'WhosWho' list is back on the air after two years
away from full on kayaking.

Interesting to see the recent Paddlewise references to Darwin, just after
his bicentenary. All the more appropriate then to kick off with a bio from
Niels Blaauw, who recently returned to Paddlewise and whose speciality is
'Evolution' http://www.paddlewise.net/whoswho/index.html#NielsBlaauw

WhosWho hasn't evolved much in the last year or two, Nevertheless it
represents a record of pleasant memories of many past members. I
occasionally wonder if Paddlewise is growing or shrinking - so if you're new
and quietly listening you might like to try browsing at
http://www.paddlewise.net/whoswho and perhaps even send me your own bio for
posting. There's not much to it, just send me an email with your details and
perhaps a photo.

In fact I'd be very glad to hear from anyone who wants to update, remove or
add an entry. Just put WhosWho in the subject line and email me on
mailto:rebyl_kayak_at_energysustained.com.au .

All the best, PeterO

G'Day,

Carey Parks has just let me know my email address for WhosWho needed
correction. It should have been mailto:rebyl_kayak_at_energysustained.com and
I've also corrected it in the email copied below.

Hope this didn't inconvenience anyone.

All the best, PeterO

Before being called an "evolutionist" and be compared to Hitler (as has
happened before, in other places on the 'net) I'd like to expand a
little on my specialty:

- I'm confident that I know more about evolution than 99% of the general
population - but then again, 99% don't know the first thing about it.
Whether I'm an expert is for others to judge.

- I find natural evolution fascinating and the results (in nature all
around us) awe inspiring. I also find natural evolution a wasteful and
cruel process that should be avoided whenever possible. Natural
evolution thrives at the expense of the weak (who will die from
starvation, thirst, sickness or being eaten) for the benefit of the
strong. That's a poor basis for the safe, comfortable and prosperous
life that I wish on all sentient beings.

Some random facts about evolution:

- Women may complain about unshaven men, but let's not forget that is
was _women_ that selected us that way. They should blame themselves for
our facial hair.

- I'm an tinkerer, and what is miss most is a third arm. There's just
_so_ many jobs that require 3 hands! A real third arm would be virtually
impossible, but an elephants trunk would have taken less then
200.000.000 years to evolve. For this missed opportunity men are as
guilty as women - or should we blame evolution itself?

Niels
