As many of you already know, I'm a fan of the venerable Mariner Coaster (as well as some other Mariners) and recently asked Robert Livingston if he had any photos of his Ursa Micro which was the prototype for the Coaster. Robert sent me some photos and I concocted a short history of the Coaster from its genesis to the current state of SOF F-1s by Brian Schulz of Cape Falcon Kayak in Manzanita, Oregon. It's a remarkable story, really. A tiny (for those days) sea kayak designed by an amateur designer/builder in Oregon morphing into a boat that would become legendary among paddlers for its abilities in surf and rock gardens and then continuing as a skin-on-frame design. I left out the Sportee. :P Story on my blog: www.nwkayaking.net.
