The Mariner coaster is unique. I have been on extended trips with Coaster kayakers and their cursing speed and gear capacity were surprising. Tom C. None of the subsequent kayaks based on that concept were exactly like any others yet they all flowed from the same idea. Brian's SC-1 project was about as close as it is possible to get to the Coaster. His F-1 is a kayak based on the Coaster but with his own refinements.. Even though they are all "different" kayaks, even a casual observer can see the resemblance between each to the other right through to the F-1. I thought that it made an interesting story. I also built two SOF kayaks. My SOF play boat is based on the dimensions of the coaster and also incorporated some elements the of the Inuit recovery Kayak.I made the mistake of telling Mat Brose that I based my SOF on the Coaster and Mat proceeded, for the next 20 minutes, to point out the differences. Brian Schulz was interested in my SOF while I was building it. This was before he started his Coaster project. As the Sportee is not a Coaster, Brian Schulz's SOF can not be a Coaster. It may be as good as a coaster. I am a fan of how a SOF handles in the surf thats why I built a sof play kayak.
