Cue the yearly viewing of Cold Water Bootcamp. http://vimeo.com/4534662 This shows the effect of cold water. Most people do not drown due to hypothermia, but instead they can no longer swim due to the cold water either through shock or muscle failure. Dry suits are good, but life jackets are the first line of defense. Even if you can no longer swim, with a life jacket you will at least still float. Without PFDs -- let alone drysuits or wetsuits or polyfleece, even -- these guys were at significant risk the second after the canoe flipped. > > Stuff happens.
