Jim and Paddlewisers,

That is a great story about the Navigators. There is more to it than
was covered in that brief account. Back in '99, I wrote a short book
review for the March issue of Ocean Kayaker, a journal no doubt
forgotten by everyone. I remember it well because I still to this very
day hand out copies of it to people interested in navigation with
chart and compass. The Book is "We, the Navigators: The ancient
art of Landfinding in the Pacific" by author David Lewis. They used
the sidereal compass, and as mentioned in your story, they used
the known major wave patterns recognizable on the open Pacific.

The reason I encourage paddlers to read the book is because the
navigators used every cue available to them on the open sea. We
can learn from them.

GPS was less common when I wrote the book review.
