Hi All,

I appreciate Matt's posts about history lessons and paddles. I will try to
respond with some answers. I understand ahead of time that no minds will be
changed by this. We had the same discussions back in the '80s. But that is
ok-I like my old paddles, and my wife likes her much shorter paddles. We all
paddle together anyway. I still enjoy the discussions as well.

Where were storm paddles used (region)? I assume that the paddlers/hunters
using them were rollers! I believe this is a key factor in who used what
paddles. I once saw a beautiful storm paddle in a museum collection They
could not tell me its origin. It had a somewhat hour-glass blade shape and
was edged almost the entire length of the blade with a strip of bone pegged
to the blade edge. The length of the shaft between the inner ends of the
blades was about the width of two thumbs. The four fingers of the "in" hand
was therefore necessarily up on the inner edge of the ~3" wide blade.
