[Paddlewise] hand paddles or other short paddles

Then, ask yourself this:

 

Would they use hand paddles if they could not also roll their boats with
them? Going over in white water is what happens in white water. Canoeists
paddle white water to get through it. White water kayakers paddle rapids to
play the waves, holes etc. White water kayakers keep at it with increasingly
challenging maneuvers and waves until they capsize! Then they roll up and
try it again until they Don't capsize!
