This is not about what well trained canoeists can do. It is also not about what well trained kayakers can do. Most white water kayakers understand that they must learn to roll their boats. Some skilled canoeists may play the waves and holes. Most do not! And you can not say that most canoeists can roll their boats. Rolling is not a high priority for many sea kayakers, and that does put them at risk when they insist on using little short GO-FAST paddles before they have developed high grade paddling skills. I do agree with your basic premise. Use the hand paddles, go out in storms, don't bother with advanced boat handling skills. Do what suits you and pay up later.
