Lots of fun watching the enthusiastic people who showed up to surf. It was tough breaking out for everyone it seemed. Staying outside and cutting some runs short so you didn't have to kill yourself fighting to get back out seemed to be the most common approach.

The early morning was just a mess with no one on the water and the beach gaggle loud with anticipation. Then suddenly the world showed up and went for it. A lot of boardies, some SUP and only three kayak surfers were out while I was there between 11 and 4. The later morning waves seemed a little cleaner and bigger.

Things got a bit more typical for Tybee as the tide fell although getting to and from the beach in a kayak really was a pain. A lot of power in the mess near the beach coupled with a fair number of people to thread your way through made for a workout. Coming back in you couldn't be sure which way your boat was going to be shoved until you ground out on the beach.

In a word the surf was unpredictable. It was hard reading the water with swells that looked perfect fading out and average looking waves suddenly tripling in size as you positioned yourself for takeoff. People seemed to either be feeding off the mayhem or getting a bit of a fear glaze on their face.

I was impressed with the sharks feeding just outside. An eight foot hammerhead slammed a fish twenty feet in front of me as I was trying to take off. The shark almost came out of the water with enthusiasm. I pretty much did the same trying to back out of that wave but not from enthusiasm.
