Last Saturday Duluth kayaker and artist Rick Allen was autographing books at the Red Balloon Bookstore in Saint Paul, so I drove over to say hello and buy his book. He used to surf Lake Superior at Minnesota Point when the wind was right, so I asked if he got out during the superstorm a couple of weeks ago, which produced a record low pressure over northern Minnesota. He said he hadn't, but he knew some kayakers who had. One had the booties pulled off his dry suit, and another lost the seat from his kayak. He noted also that the weather buoy near the Slate Islands recorded 27-foot (9-meter) wind waves during the storm. That's with a fetch of only a few hundred miles!
