Has anyone seen a waterproof iPad case yet? Probably not really useful in wee boat because of the bright sunlight, but mine goes with me everywhere else I go.

Pelican 1080CC is a waterproof case that I have ordered but not
received. I have had good luck with Pelican in the past.

But this is not a case that would allow much use of the iPad while in
the boat. It is a hard plastic non-transparent box that fits and iPad
or small laptop. I ordered it so that I could use the device at my
destination and it would be protected until then.

You would have to open the case to get to the iPad so realistic only
on a calm dry day in the kayak itself.

The flexible clear fabric plastic type of cases make me nervous. I
have not had too much luck with them. It tends to be hard to read
through the plastic. They sweat inside. They develop cracks at the
corners.

By the way, for USA northwesterners, Navionics used to sell an iPad/
iPhone electronic chart for British Columbia waters that actually
covers Puget Sound as well. I bought it a couple months ago. When I
checked today, they seem to have pulled it. I do not know if this is
temporary, but it is something to keep in mind if it comes back. You
do not have to buy two products for our local waters (British Columbia
AND USA western waters) -- or at least you did not have to in the past.

iPad charts - quick check of the web today.

Actually, it seems that Navionics has come out with a specific iPad
application

They call it Marine: British Columbia HD and they have another
one Marine: US West HD

The HD stands for high-definition. This appears to be an iPad only
product and it is more expensive than the iPhone/iPad application that
I can no longer find. (that old product was about $14 and this iPad
thing is $30)

But in any case, before buying both the British Columbia and the US
West product, you should check to see if the British Columbia one also
covers Puget Sound because the similar product in the past did.

The old iPhone product worked well on the iPad in 2X mode. It was not
pixelated once it was expanded to fill the iPad. I would be
suspicious that this new version does not do much more but I do not
have the incentive to find out since what I own works well on the
iPhone and on the iPad. I wonder if they pulled the iPhone product so
they could introduce this iPad product. Perhaps they will put back a
crippled iPhone product in the future that will not work well on the
iPad.

Anyway, this is a great product and the interface on the iPad is
marvelous.

Personally I paddle to be away from electronic devices. My time to be
disconnected from the wavelengths and enjoy the peacefulness of the water -
unless of course I am a tidal race.

be safe

I knew I'd seen an iPad case recently, page 7 of the current issue of Ocean Paddler (issue 23) has such a case from Aquapac. Says you can even use the iPad while secured in the case. www.aquapac.net
