I think good leadership always have been rare - just look at the abysmal leadership during the Great War, and all wars following that! My own bosses at work has been a mixed bunch - the present one is one of the best I ever have had. More worrying has been the leaders that I've encountered during various expeditions into the wilderness. Some fold as soon as the pressure rises, and, at best, blame everyone but themselves for the difficulties that the group faces, some applies too much of their own ego on others ("We MUST succeed"-types, that takes a reroute, diversion, or canceling, as a personal catastrophe, to be avoided at any cost), some just are not there when needed for quick decisions, either by physically being absent, or by withdrawing from everything mentally, either by panic, or going nuts. Seen all these types in action, but happily no serious injuries, but more than a few close calls. The good ones are those that get things done, takes quick decisions, and listen to those he in command over - preferably he has lots of humor, and stamina. Taking decisions is always better than stalling, even if the decision isn't 100% perfect, just as it is when driving a car in heavy traffic, flying your aircraft, or when responding to everyday situations. And I know I am not a perfect leader, but others' lives depend on me taking decisions, all the time! Tord Someone wrote: Exemplary leadership is something on the decline these days.
