Light kayaks CAN be inexpensive and durable. Never judge a book by it's
cover.

I've had many rock encounters worse than this, in the baidarka, and haven't
had a single tear in the skin or leak. Worst case - a bit of scraped varnish
that weeped a few teaspoons of water per hour.  I replace the sacrificial
Gorilla tape on the keel when it gets ratty... Reg Lake caught me at my finest
while I was goofing around off Sooke and got lifted and tossed by a sneaky
little wave. I can give the slower Surf-Skis a run for their money now, and I
imagine with a serious training program and a wing paddle I could probably up
the ante...
