G'day, Just a postscript to my last post.There is another alternative in which the blade falls vertically into the water with no horizontal movement and its vertical movement is partially converted to a forward horizontal movement by some asymmetry in the blade. That would be a very odd paddle stroke though and doesn't sound like your intended mechanism.
