Newer/younger paddlers often fail to bring their kayak up far enough or tie
it off on a rising tide before taking a break, etc. Maybe his boat floated
away (was a fast rising tide at the time) and he swam out after his "new"
kayak and didn't make it. The kayak floated back to shore. The area isn't
strictly wilderness so the shoreline search party did a pretty good search
easily enough already. Lots of current out there.

I have a picture of a guy swimming out after his rented kayak in Nootka
Sound near open water. Same deal. I was high up on shore, this guy being a
visitor from Colorado. Almost too funny to watch if it werent so possibly
tragically fatal for some.

He was seen leaving wearing a life jacket and a life jacket was found in the
kayak on the beach. Unless he had a spare life jacket with him (which seems
unlikely) this is another indication he made it to shore with his kayak. I'd
be searching the shore and trying to determine what routes he may have tried
to use to get back to civilization or to seek shelter in his likely cold and
wet condition.
